A massive regeneration project will bring thousands of new jobs and homes to the Thames Gateway.
The Gateway stretches for 40 miles along the Thames Estuary from the London Docklands to Southend in Essex and Sheerness in Kent. The area was badly affected by the decline of industries serving London and the South East.
The vision for the Thames Gateway is to create:
- 180,000 new jobs, through business and economic investment
- 160,000 new, well-designed homes. These will include affordable homes which can be rented or bought by first time buyers
- a high quality transport system
- better education facilities
- high quality healthcare
- attractive open spaces with access to the river
Communities and Local Government is one of the major partners leading this ambitious programme and has appointed Judith Armitt as Thames Gateway Chief Executive. Judith's role is to provide clear leadership for all partners and she will be a figurehead in the Gateway as the project progresses
